Gone the moment you do it

Feedback is written in private and published to strangers. The gap between those two states is the submit button, and it is the only part of the process you control.

1.What publishing does that writing does not

While the text sits in the box it belongs to you. It can be softened, sharpened or thrown away. Submit changes who it belongs to. It becomes a line other people read, quote and remember.

The market does not have to do anything special for this to be true. Publication is the whole mechanism, and it is one of the six things that close a window. Once it leaves you, the copy in a reader's head is beyond anything the interface offers.

What closes it
Publication to people who are not you.

Add an update that reads as an update, and stay consistent around it.

2.Editing adds, it does not erase

Most systems let you revise feedback and some show an edited marker. Neither brings anything back. Readers who saw the first line saw it, and a visible edit tells everyone a first line existed.

There is a second copy problem too. Feedback gets screenshotted, pasted into conversations and repeated in summaries, none of which follow your revision. A screenshot you kept is the same behaviour from the other side.

Read this twiceThe urge to publish is strongest at the hour your judgement is worst, which is the evening a parcel fails to arrive. Nothing is lost by writing the text now and submitting it tomorrow.

3.Why a private apology settles nothing

A vendor who feels unfairly rated will often write to you rather than reply in public. It reaches one person. The line reached everyone who looked at the page. Sorting it out privately leaves the public record exactly as it was.

The reverse is worth naming. If you wrote something unfair, a private apology is the easy half. The public correction costs you something, and it repairs something. An order you finalised is usually what put you here.

4.What readers keep that you cannot reach

  • That editing erases the first version. It replaces what is displayed. It cannot reach a reader who has already read it.
  • That deleting removes the effect. A rating that disappears is itself a fact readers notice.
  • That a private apology undoes a public line. Different audiences. One person against everybody else.
  • That nobody reads old feedback. Buyers checking a vendor read exactly that, because it is the only history on offer.
Feedback outlives the order it describes.

An order takes days. The line about it sits on a profile for as long as the profile does, read by people who will never know what happened.

Writing for that reader rather than for the vendor produces fewer regrets.

5.What you can still do about a line you regret

  1. Add an update rather than quietly rewriting. An honest correction reads better than a disappearance.
  2. Say what changed and nothing else. A retraction with a fresh grievance stapled to it convinces nobody.
  3. Leave the tone alone if the facts were right. Regretting how sharp you sounded is not the same as having been wrong.

6.The pause that would have helped

Write it, close the tab, come back later. The draft that still looks right in the morning is the one worth publishing. It also helps to remember what feedback is for. It is a message to the next buyer, not a punishment aimed at a vendor. The rule this site runs on applies in miniature, because how angry you are has nothing to do with whether the line can be recalled.

Also usefulThings people are sure they can undoWhere published text sits among the rest of the settled actions.

Questions people send in

I edited it within a minute. Surely nobody saw it?

Probably nobody did, and probably is not the same as nobody.

The vendor made it right afterwards. Should I change the rating?

If the facts changed, say so in an update and change the score. What is not worth doing is deleting the original description, because the next buyer needs it more than the vendor needs the number.

Can a vendor have feedback removed?

Sometimes a market removes a line that breaks its own rules. That is the market acting, not you retrieving it.
