Gone the moment you do it

Finalise is one confirmation that closes an order for everybody in it. The word sounds administrative and the effect is not. After it, the market has nothing left to decide and the vendor has nothing left to lose.

1.What finalise means to the market

To you it is a button at the end of a page. To the market it is a statement that the order is complete and the account can be settled. Every protection that existed while the order was open existed because it was open.

The confusion comes from the interface. Finalise sits in the same row as buttons that do ordinary, reversible things, and nothing in the design says this one has no step after it.

There is no window here. Confirming is the closing.

On confirm.
What closes it
Your own statement that the order is done.
Still possible after
Feedback, a message to the vendor, a note to yourself about the sequence.

2.Why asking to un-finalise goes nowhere

The request is reasonable and the answer never varies. Un-finalising means reopening a settled account and taking back money already assigned. A sympathetic operator has no mechanism for it, and one that did would run an arrangement no vendor could work under.

A vendor cannot do it either. A vendor can send you something, which is a new and voluntary act, but cannot put the order back into the state it was in. What is still possible once it has shut is the general version, and this is its plainest case.

ImportantFinalise because a vendor asked and you have done two things at once. You have settled the order, and you have told the vendor that asking works. The second one comes back, because the same request tends to arrive on the next order.

3.The formality that is not one

People call finalising a formality, and the word does real harm. A formality is a step whose outcome is already fixed by everything before it. This is the opposite. It fixes everything after it, and it is the last point where your opinion carries weight.

The same misreading runs through releasing escrow before the parcel arrived. Whatever the interface calls it, the substance is a hand-off, and hand-offs do not come back.

4.What people are sure is reversible here

  • That finalising is a formality. It is the settlement. The rest of the page was the formal part.
  • That you can un-finalise by asking nicely. There is nothing to ask for. Nobody is refusing you, they are describing the software.
  • That a vendor can reverse it on your behalf. A vendor can send money, at their discretion. That is a new payment, not a reversal.

5.What remains once it is closed

  1. Feedback. It stays public, and it is worth writing calmly. Feedback once it is published explains why the first version is the one that matters.
  2. The conversation. A vendor who wants repeat buyers reads a short factual message. Whether they act is theirs to decide.
  3. Your own sequence. Write down what you confirmed and when, against what actually arrived. That line changes the next order.
The button is the same size as all the others.

Interfaces rarely mark the point of no return, because it is not a feature anyone wants to advertise.

So the reader has to hold the map. On an order page, the finalising step is the one to slow down for.

6.Where the decision actually belonged

At the door, with the parcel in your hands, and not before. If a vendor needs settlement earlier, they are asking you to carry the whole risk of an order you have already paid for. The index of every action and the window it has puts finalising next to its neighbours, and the comparison teaches more than any single page.

Questions people send in

I finalised and then the parcel never came. What now?

Message once, factually, and leave feedback describing the sequence without heat. Neither recovers the money. Both are worth doing, and the second is worth more to the next reader than to you.

Is finalising the same as releasing escrow?

Often it is the same act with a different label, and both end with money settled on the vendor. Read whichever button ends the order as final.
