A wrong address pasted but not sent
Minutes to undo
The box is filled in and your finger is over the button. Nothing has left. This is one of the few places on this site where the outcome sits behind a check that costs ten seconds, and almost everybody skips it.

Printed as supplied, in no order. Nothing here is watched or timed, so an address that loads is not proof of anything. More about the set
1.Nothing has left yet
A pasted string is not a payment. It is a draft of one. Until you press send, the destination is text in a form, and text in a form can be replaced at no cost. Almost nothing else here is that cheap.
One second later the same string becomes a payment you have already sent, and that page is short because there is very little to say once it has gone.
- Window opens
- When the destination lands in the field.
- Window closes
- When you confirm and it leaves.
- What closes it
- Your own press of the button, which is unusual here.
- Still possible after
- Very little. Ask, and expect nothing.
2.The check that costs ten seconds
Do not read the address. Compare it. Put the source in front of you and read a run of characters out of the middle of the string against the same run in the source. Then a second run elsewhere. Then check the length.
| What you compared | What that proves |
|---|---|
| The first four characters | Almost nothing. That is the cheapest part to reproduce. |
| The last four as well | A little more, and still the part a swap is built to survive. |
| A run from the middle | Much more. The middle is what a lookalike cannot control. |
| Two runs and the length | Everything you can prove without sending a thing. |
3.Why the ends are not enough
Anybody producing a near-miss address knows which parts get looked at. The ends do, because they fit in a truncated display. So the ends are what the near-miss is built around, and the middle is where the work shows.
The interface will not help. It cannot tell a wrong destination from a right one, because both are valid strings and it has no idea which you meant. Waiting for a warning is waiting for something the software never had.
4.What can change the field under you
The paste and the press are not always the same moment. In between, the clipboard can be overwritten, a page can rewrite the value in the box, or you can tab back into a form that reloaded and restored an older draft. None of that announces itself.
So check the field rather than your memory of what you copied. Your memory is about the copy. The field is about the send. What is sitting in the buffer meanwhile has its own entry.
5.The two beliefs that empty accounts
- That matching first and last characters is enough. It is the exact comparison a substituted address is designed to pass.
- That the interface would warn you. It has no opinion about where your money should go and never did.
Both treat the check as a formality rather than the thing that decides the outcome. The rule this site runs on sorts actions by whether you can take them back. This one you can, for a few more seconds.
6.If it has already gone
Stop looking for an undo. Write down the destination, the time and where the string came from. Tell anyone expecting the money early rather than once they chase you. Then change how you get addresses, because a wrong one usually means the source was the weak part.
Truncated displays show the head and the tail. That is why those are the characters a near-miss reproduces, and why the middle is the only part worth your ten seconds.
Questions people send in
Are two runs from the middle really enough?
Far better than the ends, and it takes seconds. Reading the whole string against the source is better still, and nothing is stopping you.
What if the address came from a message?
Then the message is the weak point rather than your eyes. Compare against something you held before the conversation started.
Can a send be cancelled if I am quick?
Assume not. Build the habit around the check instead, because that is the part that reliably works.
